President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally nominated General Christopher Gwabin Musa as the new Minister of Defence, following the resignation of Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar earlier this week. In a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the President conveyed his confidence in General Musa’s capacity to lead the Ministry of Defence and strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

General Musa, 58, brings decades of distinguished military experience to his new role. Born in Sokoto in 1967, he completed his primary and secondary education locally before attending the College of Advanced Studies in Zaria, graduating in 1986. That same year, he enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy, earning a Bachelor of Science degree upon graduation in 1991. Commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army that year, he has since held numerous key positions that underscore his extensive operational and strategic expertise.

Throughout his career, General Musa has served in roles such as General Staff Officer 1, Training and Operations at HQ 81 Division, Commanding Officer of the 73 Battalion, and Assistant Director of Operational Requirements at the Department of Army Policy and Plans. He also contributed to training initiatives as the Infantry Representative on the Training Team at HQ Nigerian Army Armour Corps.

His operational leadership has been particularly notable in recent years. In 2019, he served as Deputy Chief of Staff, Training/Operations at the Headquarters Infantry Centre and Corps, as well as Commander of Sector 3 for both Operation Lafiya Dole and the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad region. By 2021, he had become Theatre Commander of Operation Hadin Kai before assuming command of the Nigerian Army Infantry Corps. His exemplary service culminated in his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff by President Tinubu in 2023, a position he held until October 2025.

General Musa’s achievements have earned him recognition both nationally and internationally, including the prestigious Colin Powell Award for Soldiering in 2012. His appointment as Minister of Defence comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s security, and the Presidency has expressed full confidence that his leadership will advance the country’s defense strategy and enhance the operational effectiveness of the armed forces.
