The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening diplomatic and technological cooperation with Hungary as part of broader efforts to modernize Nigeria’s immigration and security systems. Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, gave the assurance during a courtesy visit by Hungarian Ambassador, Lorand Endreffy, in Abuja.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo highlighted that Nigeria’s ongoing visa reforms, including the Electronic Entry Visa (EEV), have eliminated the need for applicants to physically visit embassies, enabling full online processing. He explained that the Ministry is currently upgrading its digital payment infrastructure to streamline the process and expand government-controlled payment gateways to bolster reliability and transparency.
Receiving an updated Memorandum of Understanding from the Hungarian envoy, covering police training, border management and security technology, Ambassador Endreffy commended Nigeria’s immigration modernization efforts, describing the real-time visa tracking platform as “a wonderful improvement” in government-to-government cooperation. He also praised the professionalism of immigration personnel in both Abuja and Budapest.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo reiterated that the reforms are part of the administration’s vision to strengthen Nigeria’s global competitiveness, boost economic exchange, and expand international accessibility. “Our goal is simple: to make Nigeria more open, efficient, and globally competitive… to facilitate travel, trade, and migration,” he said.
The partnership is expected to further enhance security collaboration, drive digital governance, and support Nigeria’s efforts to integrate advanced technology into public service delivery — a development widely viewed as a positive step for economic diplomacy and Nigeria’s international image.
