Nigeria has strengthened its ties with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) as the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Tuesday signed a renewed Memorandum of Understanding to bolster food assistance and humanitarian support across the country.

The renewed MoU serves as a strategic framework for implementing the WFP Nigeria Country Strategic Plan (2023–2027), following the expiration of the first agreement signed in 2017. The partnership is expected to scale up collaboration in emergency response, food supply coordination, and support for communities affected by conflict, economic shocks, and climate-induced crises.

NEMA reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the collaboration, stressing that Nigeria will fulfil its obligations to ensure smooth execution of the agreement. The agency said the cooperation with WFP will further enhance its capacity to deliver rapid and efficient assistance to populations in need.

While expressing optimism about the partnership, a NEMA representative said the renewed alliance would advance humanitarian goals, describing it as “a fruitful and impact-driven collaboration that strengthens our joint efforts to save lives and support vulnerable communities.”

The partnership marks another major step in Nigeria’s engagement with global partners seeking sustainable solutions to hunger and humanitarian emergencies.
