Imo State First Lady, Barr. Chioma Uzodimma, has renewed the call for a total end to Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) across the state, describing the practice as a grave violation of the rights and dignity of girls. She made the declaration on Tuesday during a One-Day Reflective Dialogue held with wives of traditional rulers, women groups, and key community stakeholders.
The event, organized in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) under the UN Joint Programme on the Elimination of FGM, brought together influential voices committed to protecting young girls from harmful traditional practices. UNFPA representatives Ms. Muriel Mafico and Dr. Andrew Karima were also in attendance.
In her keynote address, the First Lady said the forum marked “a historic moment for the transformation of our daughters’ future,” stressing that FGM has no cultural or traditional justification.
“Female genital mutilation is violence. It is not culture. It is not tradition. It is a violation of our daughters’ rights, their health, and their dignity,” she stated firmly.
Barr. Uzodimma recalled the unveiling of the State Action Plan earlier in the year and praised the wives of Local Government Chairmen for championing sensitization campaigns across communities, educating families and villages on the dangers of the practice.
She also honoured survivors of FGM present at the event, acknowledging the physical and emotional scars many of them still carry. Their courage
