The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved ₦100 billion for the rehabilitation of police and security agency training institutions across Nigeria, marking a major step toward strengthening the country’s overstretched security architecture. The fund, however, remains subject to final ratification by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The decision was reached during NEC’s 154th virtual meeting on Wednesday, following a report submitted by its ad hoc committee, which had been tasked with assessing the condition of security training facilities nationwide.

NEC also approved an additional ₦2.6 billion for consultancy services, which will guide the technical framework and execution of the rehabilitation project.

The proposal aligns with President Tinubu’s earlier call—made during NEC’s 152nd meeting in October—for a complete overhaul of training infrastructures for the police and other security agencies. He had stressed the need for rooted reforms as part of broader national security improvements.

Chairman of the ad hoc committee, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State, emphasized the urgency of the intervention, revealing that “most of the training institutions are in dire condition.” His committee’s findings detailed widespread structural decay, inadequate equipment, and outdated training systems across multiple facilities.

The update was shared by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to modernize Nigeria’s security institutions and boost capacity development for personnel tasked with safeguarding lives and property.

With rising insecurity across the country, stakeholders say the rehabilitation of these institutions is not just timely—but essential. Strengthened training infrastructure is expected to enhance professionalism, improve response strategies, and reinforce coordination among security agencies.

The Council’s approval now awaits the President’s final endorsement before implementation begins.
