In a major breakthrough against organized violent crime, operatives of the Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, have apprehended 20 suspected cultists believed to be connected to the recent murder of a police officer and other violent crimes in Ilesi, near Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

The arrests followed a targeted, intelligence-driven operation aimed at dismantling criminal networks responsible for cult-related activities and violent crimes across southwestern Nigeria. According to police sources, the suspects are allegedly involved in a wide range of criminal acts, including armed robbery, assault, and ritualistic killings, with the officer’s murder serving as a key trigger for intensified police action.

A spokesperson for the Zone 2 Police Command confirmed the operation, stating, “Our operatives have been working tirelessly to bring dangerous criminal elements to justice. The arrest of these 20 suspects is a significant milestone in our ongoing campaign against cultism and violent crime. We are committed to ensuring that those who threaten public safety are apprehended and prosecuted.”

Eyewitnesses in Ilesi and surrounding communities described a climate of fear following a recent spate of cult-related attacks, which have reportedly disrupted daily life, instilled terror in residents, and strained local law enforcement resources. Community leaders welcomed the arrests, expressing hope that the police’s proactive measures would restore peace and deter future criminal activity.

The suspects are currently undergoing intensive interrogation, with police officers working to establish connections to other unresolved crimes in Lagos, Ogun, and neighboring states. Authorities have also indicated that further operations targeting violent cult groups are planned, reinforcing their resolve to clamp down on criminal networks and protect lives.

Security analysts note that cultism in southwestern Nigeria has been a persistent challenge, often fueled by socioeconomic factors, rivalry between youth gangs, and limited community oversight. The recent arrests are therefore seen not only as a law enforcement success but also as a necessary step toward broader strategies to curb youth involvement in criminal gangs and safeguard communities.

As investigations continue, the police have called on citizens to report suspicious activities and collaborate with security agencies to ensure that justice is served and that communities can live free from fear and violence.
