Rivers State has been thrown back into political uncertainty as a new confrontation erupts between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the State House of Assembly headed by Speaker Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, barely weeks after governance structures were restored and the state began recovering from months of tension.

According to multiple sources familiar with developments, the latest clash stems from renewed disagreements over executive decisions, legislative autonomy, and the lingering fallout of unresolved political loyalties that have continued to shape the fragile balance of power in the state.

The conflict reportedly resurfaced after the Assembly raised concerns about what it described as “unilateral actions” taken by the governor, while the executive countered by accusing certain lawmakers of attempting to undermine governance through “politically motivated obstruction.”

A senior government insider said the governor believes some members of the Assembly are attempting to reassert influence that had been curtailed during the earlier crisis.
“The Governor is trying to run the state without interference, but some lawmakers are pushing back,” the source revealed.

On the legislative side, a member of the Assembly argued that the governor has repeatedly ignored procedural expectations.
“We cannot allow the executive to operate without regard for the law. The Assembly will not be sidelined,” the lawmaker insisted.

Political analysts warn that this renewed confrontation—occurring just two months after the state began experiencing relative calm—could once again destabilize governance if not quickly contained.
One analyst noted, “The root cause of the Rivers crisis was never fully resolved. What we’re seeing now is a resurfacing of the same fractures.”

Residents, who had hoped for stability after months of turmoil, are expressing frustration at the return of political hostilities. Civil society groups are calling for immediate dialogue, urging both sides to prioritise governance over factional battles.

As the situation continues to unfold, stakeholders across the state are watching closely, concerned that Rivers may be heading into yet another cycle of confrontation unless urgent mediation is introduced.
