Abuja, Nigeria – Hamza Nuhu Dantani, a legal practitioner at KayodeAjulo & Co., Castle of Law, Maitama, Abuja, has sharply criticised the current Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, describing him as the “worst and lawless” in Nigeria’s history. In a detailed post on Facebook, Dantani condemned what he called repeated abuses of office, violations of the law, and interference in matters already under judicial scrutiny.

According to Dantani, IGP Egbetokun has repeatedly used his position to overstep legal boundaries, undermining the constitution and democratic processes. He cited a recent incident in Kano State, where Barrister Muyi Magaji, the former head of the state’s independent Anti-Corruption body, was reportedly arrested and interrogated by police despite an ongoing case already before a competent court of jurisdiction.

“The retired refused to be tired! A man who always used his office to abuse the law, the constitution, and the democratic society!” Dantani wrote, emphasising what he perceives as a pattern of overreach and disregard for due process.

The legal practitioner highlighted the perceived absurdity of the police questioning Barr. Magaji on procedural matters that had already been examined by his office and the courts. “The most annoying part is the way the police were questioning Muyi Magaji during the interrogation—it is terribly laughable,” Dantani stated. He recounted that one of the most “annoying” questions posed by officers under IGP Egbetokun’s command was: “You Muyi, how did you start this investigation that led you to charge this man to High Court?”

Dantani argued that such actions not only disrespect judicial processes but also threaten the independence of regulatory and investigative bodies. He stressed that the police intervention in this case appears unnecessary, given that the matter remains pending in court.

Observers note that this is part of a growing discourse about law enforcement overreach and accountability in Nigeria, raising questions about the proper limits of police authority, particularly in cases that have already been investigated by statutory agencies and submitted to the judiciary.

Barr. Magaji’s arrest and subsequent questioning have drawn widespread attention on social media, with legal analysts warning that such incidents could erode public trust in law enforcement institutions. Experts argue that the police under IGP Egbetokun must strictly adhere to legal boundaries, respect independent investigative bodies, and avoid actions that could be perceived as intimidation or interference in ongoing judicial processes.

Dantani concluded his post by expressing deep concern over the impact of IGP Egbetokun’s actions on democratic governance and the rule of law. He urged that the police maintain respect for constitutional limits, warning that repeated violations could undermine both institutional integrity and public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.

The Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has not yet responded to the allegations or comments made by Dantani. The incident continues to generate debate among legal practitioners, civil society actors, and members of the public.
