The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has officially declared the South-East region of Nigeria safe for Christmas festivities, urging Igbo citizens both within the country and abroad to return home in large numbers to celebrate the season.

In a statement released on Monday, IPOB spokespersons highlighted what they described as a marked improvement in security across states in the South-East, noting that the environment is now conducive for safe travel, family reunions, and cultural observances. The group assured that all necessary measures have been taken to prevent incidents of violence, kidnappings, or disruptions during the holiday period.

IPOB stressed the importance of reconnecting with family, tradition, and cultural roots, encouraging members of the Igbo community to partake in the festive season without fear. “We call on our brothers and sisters in the diaspora, as well as those within the country, to return home for Christmas. The region is safe, and it is time to celebrate with loved ones,” the statement read.

The group also noted that community leaders and local security outfits have collaborated to ensure a peaceful atmosphere for religious gatherings, public celebrations, and private events. While IPOB is not a formal governmental body, the call reflects its ongoing engagement with local populations in the South-East and efforts to promote regional stability and cultural cohesion.

Security analysts welcomed the announcement cautiously, advising travelers to still remain alert and follow official travel guidance. They emphasised that while improvements may have occurred, vigilance remains essential given the country’s broader security challenges, particularly during peak festive periods.

The South-East, which includes states such as Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia, and Ebonyi, has faced intermittent security challenges in recent years, ranging from criminal activity to politically motivated unrest. Authorities have reportedly stepped up patrols and coordinated efforts with local community groups to reduce risks, especially during high-traffic holiday seasons.

IPOB’s declaration may also carry socio-political significance, signalling the group’s attempt to reassure residents and stabilize movement in the region. Analysts note that encouraging safe travel and the return of citizens can have positive economic and cultural effects, boosting local commerce and reinforcing communal ties during the holiday season.

The festive period, traditionally marked by family gatherings, church services, and cultural events, is expected to see increased activity as Igbo people heed the call and return to their home states. Residents are being encouraged to continue practicing personal safety measures, remain vigilant during travels, and report any unusual activities to local authorities.

As the Christmas season approaches, both citizens and visitors are being reminded to prioritize safety, respect local customs, and enjoy the holiday in a spirit of unity and peace.
