The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has strongly condemned the reported attempted military takeover in the Republic of Benin, describing the move as a grave threat to democratic governance in the region. In an official statement released on Sunday, the Commission expressed “consternation” over the developments, stressing that it “strongly condemns this unconstitutional move that represents a subversion of the will of the people of Benin.”

ECOWAS lauded the swift response of the Beninese government and the Republican Army in working to contain the situation, emphasizing the imperative to uphold the country’s constitution and respect democratic processes. The Commission warned that individuals involved in the plot would be held “individually and collectively responsible for any loss to life and property occasioned by their action.”

Highlighting its broader mandate to protect democratic institutions across West Africa, ECOWAS reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Benin and its citizens. The regional bloc also signaled readiness to intervene if necessary, including the possible deployment of its standby force, to defend the constitutional order and territorial integrity of the Republic of Benin.

The statement, issued from Abuja on December 7, 2025, reflects ECOWAS’s ongoing role as a guarantor of peace and democracy in the West African sub-region, particularly amid rising concerns over military interventions in civilian governments.
