Operatives of the Edo State Security Corps (ESSC) have apprehended a suspected kidnapper, identified as Ibrahim Mohammed, while allegedly delivering a firearm to accomplices around the Oluku bypass on the Benin–Akure road in Benin City. According to the ESSC’s Deputy Commander of Operations, the arrest was made during a patrol following credible intelligence that a gun was to be delivered to a local kidnapping gang. The recovered firearm, along with the suspect, has been handed over to the police for further investigation and profiling.
Security officials say the apprehension comes amid a spike in kidnapping incidents along the Benin–Akure corridor, prompting heightened patrols, surveillance, and collaboration among security agencies. The ESSC has stated that its personnel remain on high alert as investigations proceed in a bid to dismantle criminal networks operating in the area.
Earlier in 2025, the Corps had captured 18 suspected kidnappers and armed robbers along the Benin–Auchi road, siezing 38 locally made guns, pellets, and charms. That operation underscored both the persistence of criminal activity in Edo State and the state government’s renewed push — under orders from Governor Monday Okpebholo — to clear forests and highways of armed gangs. The recent arrest of Ibrahim Mohammed appears to be part of this coordinated enforcement effort.
The incident highlights the continued vulnerability of travellers and roadside communities along major highways to kidnapping syndicates and armed robbery groups. As investigations unfold, state security operators are urging the public to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement by reporting suspicious movements or activities.
