The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has issued a formal clarification concerning the diversion of one of its C-130 transport aircraft on 8 December 2025. The aircraft, on a ferry mission from Lagos to Portugal, reportedly developed a technical issue shortly after take-off; as a result, the crew elected to make a precautionary landing at the nearest safe airfield — Bobo‑Dioulasso Airport in Burkina Faso — in line with international aviation safety procedures.
In a statement signed by Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, NAF emphasized that all personnel aboard the aircraft are unharmed and have received “cordial treatment” from the host authorities in Burkina Faso. The air force categorically denied reports alleging that the aircraft was grounded or its crew detained by Burkinabe military forces.
According to NAF, the diversion was prompted solely by a technical concern observed during flight — a standard safeguard measure. The aircrew acted in accordance with established safety protocols and international aviation norms, opting to land at the closest available airfield to avert risk.
NAF also stated that arrangements are underway to resume the ferry mission to Portugal once all technical checks and clearances are completed. The air force reaffirmed its commitment to operational discipline, safety standards, and the welfare of its personnel, stressing that the decision to divert was made in the interest of safety and responsible conduct.
The clarification comes after some media and regional statements alleged that the aircraft had been forced down by Burkina Faso authorities for violating airspace belonging to Alliance of Sahel States (AES) — a claim NAF has rejected.
As the matter unfolds, the emphasis remains on transparency and adherence to safety procedures. NAF’s public communications aim to reassure both national and international observers that no breach of protocol occurred, and that the safety of crew and aircraft was the overriding concern.
