Nigeria’s strategic defence relationship with India received a fresh boost on 9 December 2025 when Indian Defence Adviser to Nigeria, Colonel Manoj Singh, paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, at the Army Headquarters in Abuja. The visit reaffirmed both nations’ commitment to strengthening military cooperation and advancing shared security priorities in a rapidly evolving regional security environment.

During the visit, Colonel Singh praised the Nigerian Army for its consistent efforts in tackling security challenges nationwide. He highlighted India’s willingness to broaden defence collaboration, particularly in the areas of professional training, technical knowledge exchange, and capacity building for Nigerian Army personnel. The adviser emphasized that India remains committed to supporting Nigeria in developing robust and effective security capabilities.

Lieutenant General Shaibu, in his remarks, reiterated the critical importance of maintaining a long-term partnership with the Indian Armed Forces. He acknowledged India’s longstanding contributions to Nigerian military training, defence development, and capacity building, noting the need to further enhance cooperation in counter-terrorism operations, intelligence sharing, equipment support, and professional military education.

The visit featured ceremonial exchanges, including the presentation of souvenirs by the COAS to Colonel Singh as a symbol of friendship and continued cooperation. Colonel Singh also signed the visitors’ book and participated in an official group photograph with senior army officials, highlighting the cordial and collaborative spirit of the engagement.

Observers note that this visit comes at a time when regional security challenges require stronger bilateral partnerships. Nigeria’s engagement with India is expected to bring additional expertise, training opportunities, and technical support to the Nigerian Army, ensuring that both countries can respond more effectively to evolving threats.

The meeting underscores Nigeria’s strategic approach to international defence partnerships, combining professional military development with diplomatic engagement to strengthen security, capacity, and regional stability. Both sides have expressed commitment to sustaining this collaboration for mutual benefit and long-term security objectives.
