In a move highlighting Rivers State’s ongoing commitment to child welfare, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Benibo Anabraba, PhD, representing Governor Siminalayi Fubara, received the new UNICEF Country Representative, Wafaa Saeed, alongside her senior management team, during an official field visit to Port Harcourt.
The meeting, which also included the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Adaeze Chidinma Oreh, Executive Secretary of the Rivers State Primary Healthcare Management Board, Dr. Chituru Adele, and several directors from the Ministry of Health, focused on ongoing collaborations and future initiatives aimed at improving child health and protection across the state.
During discussions, stakeholders reviewed current programs, assessed progress on previously agreed interventions, and identified priority areas where UNICEF support could be leveraged to further strengthen Rivers State’s efforts. Key topics included immunisation programs, nutritional interventions, child protection services, and community-level healthcare initiatives.
UNICEF officials reportedly commended Rivers State for its proactive investments and sustained commitment to improving child health outcomes, noting the state’s innovative strategies and strong governance structures that have bolstered service delivery. The recognition underscores Rivers State’s role as a model for effective public-private collaboration in healthcare within the region.
Dr. Anabraba expressed optimism about deepening the partnership, emphasizing that government and development partners must work hand-in-hand to ensure that children not only survive but thrive. “This engagement provides an important platform to align our priorities, coordinate resources, and ensure every child in Rivers State has access to quality health and protection services,” he said.
The visit also offered an avenue for UNICEF to gain firsthand insight into the state’s programs, challenges, and opportunities, which will inform technical support, funding, and policy guidance moving forward. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining a robust, mutually beneficial relationship dedicated to advancing child welfare, strengthening health systems, and promoting protective environments for the state’s most vulnerable populations.
