In a recent sermon at the 2025 Holy Ghost Congress of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Adeboye explained his decision to no longer employ female secretaries — a stance he says stems from personal conviction, spiritual discipline, and concern for moral integrity.

He recalled that when his ministry moved fully to the church’s campgrounds, his schedule became unpredictable and often extended late into the night. In his own words, the prospect of being alone late at night with a woman who is not his wife posed a risk he could no longer ignore. For Pastor Adeboye, the decision is not about gender discrimination but about avoiding situations that could lead to temptation or scandal.

He praised his former secretary — describing her as a devoted, sincere believer — but maintained that, considering the demands of his role, even exemplary character could not eliminate the inherent risks associated with overnight work and private interactions.

Pastor Adeboye went further to encourage other church leaders under his guidance to adopt similar boundaries. He cited examples of past colleagues who he believed prospered spiritually and in ministry once they removed what he described as potential “ stumbling blocks.”

By framing the choice as one of personal accountability and pastoral responsibility, he emphasizes the phrase he used during the sermon: “Jonah must go,” referring to anything — even a trusted helper — that might jeopardise spiritual integrity.
