Troops from the 8 Division, Nigerian Army have dealt a major blow to armed bandit networks in Sokoto State by neutralising a top commander, Kachalla Kallamu, along with several suspected accomplices in a coordinated operation in Sabon Birni Local Government Area. The strike forms part of a broader counter‑banditry campaign under Operation FANSAN YAMMA that recent days have seen deliver a string of successes against terror and criminal elements.
According to a senior military source speaking with newsmen, the operation unfolded in the early hours of Monday near Kurawa village, where Kallamu was killed alongside a key logistics supplier linked to the network led by fugitive terror kingpin Bello Turji. The source described the elimination of Kallamu — long regarded as a major threat in the Sabon Birni corridor — as a “significant victory” that is expected to seriously disrupt the operational capacity of Turji’s network in the region.
Security forces reportedly acted on credible intelligence, aided by sustained cooperation from local vigilante groups. The synergy between communities and formal security operatives was highlighted as critical to the successful mission — a point also underscored by local authorities, who have hailed the commitment and professionalism displayed by the troops.
In parallel to the neutralisation of Kallamu, the operation led to the death of at least 14 other suspected bandits across separate yet overlapping engagements in the same local government area. Authorities say weapons, including multiple AK‑47 rifles, were recovered — dealing a serious blow to the supply chains that have sustained repeated attacks, kidnappings, and terror operations in the north‑west.
Residents in Sabon Birni and surrounding villages have welcomed the development, expressing cautious optimism that the wave of violence that has long plagued their communities may finally begin to recede. Some described the news as “long‑awaited justice.” Local government representatives and state security advisers have reaffirmed their support for continued pressure against bandit enclaves and urged citizens to remain vigilant and supportive of intelligence‑led operations.
The success of this mission builds on earlier achievements under Operation FANSAN YAMMA, where troops recently ambushed and neutralised eleven other terrorists near the same area, foiling an imminent attack on a civilian target and recovering a cache of arms.
For now, the elimination of Kallamu and his lieutenants deals a severe blow to one of the most dangerous criminal networks in Sokoto State — but security sources warn that this is far from the end of the fight. Intelligence operations, community collaboration, and sustained military pressure remain key to stabilising the region and ensuring lasting peace for its vulnerable communities.
