Osun State Governor, Adewale Adeleke, has appealed to the Nigerian Army and other security agencies to step up measures to prevent armed bandits from crossing into Osun State from neighbouring Kwara, warning that porous borders have increasingly exposed communities to violence. The governor’s appeal comes amid growing insecurity in the South-West, where cross-border raids and kidnappings have disrupted rural life and threatened livelihoods.

Governor Adeleke made the call during a security briefing in Osogbo, where he acknowledged the army’s ongoing deployments along the Osun-Kwara border and stressed the need for sustained vigilance. He highlighted that bandits have exploited weak monitoring of border towns, moving freely to commit attacks and evade capture. “Our border communities cannot continue to live in fear. The military must be proactive to prevent the spillover of violence into Osun,” Adeleke said.

The governor further emphasised the importance of coordinated operations between Osun and Kwara security units, urging intelligence-led patrols and rapid-response mechanisms to tackle criminal networks. He pledged state support for logistics, communications infrastructure, and collaboration with local vigilante groups, including the Amotekun Corps, to enhance protection for vulnerable populations.

Communities along the Osun-Kwara border have reported increasing incidents of kidnappings, armed raids, and destruction of farmlands, leading to displacement and economic disruption. Analysts note that these patterns underscore the need for cross-state cooperation and a unified security strategy, combining military strength with community engagement to prevent further escalation.

Security agencies have responded by reinforcing joint patrols, surveillance, and targeted operations, while Governor Adeleke continues to press for a sustained and professional military presence. Officials stress that the combination of proactive army deployments, intelligence sharing, and local collaboration is essential to curtail the movement of bandits and restore a sense of safety to Osun’s border communities.

The governor’s appeal highlights the broader challenge of inter-state banditry in the South-West, where criminal networks exploit poorly monitored corridors to extend their reach. By calling for intensified military action and robust collaboration with police and local security units, Adeleke seeks to safeguard lives, protect property, and ensure stability for residents along the Osun-Kwara border.
