Nollywood actress and outspoken social commentator, Doris Ogala, has once again ignited public debate following a controversial statement in which she called on the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the church of popular Lagos-based cleric, Pastor Chris Okafor, founder of Grace Nation International (formerly Liberation City).
In a strongly worded remark that has since gone viral on social media, Ogala alleged that security operatives should carry out an extensive investigation within the church premises, including its altar and pulpit.
“DSS should go to Pastor Chris Okafor's church and open up his altar. They should dig up his pulpit,” Ogala was quoted as saying.
0Although she did not provide specific evidence to back her claims, the actress’ statement has triggered intense reactions across social media platforms, with users sharply divided over her comments. While some have criticized her remarks as reckless, defamatory, and disrespectful to religious institutions, others argue that her comments reflect growing public skepticism and calls for greater scrutiny of influential religious leaders.
Pastor Chris Okafor, a prominent figure in Nigeria’s Pentecostal Christian community, commands a large following and is known for high-profile miracle claims, prophetic declarations, and large-scale church programmes. As of the time of filing this report, neither Pastor Okafor nor the leadership of Grace Nation International has issued an official response to Ogala’s comments.
The DSS has also not reacted publicly to the statement, and there is no indication that any investigation has been initiated.
Observers note that Doris Ogala has increasingly positioned herself as a vocal critic of what she describes as excesses within religious and social institutions. However, legal experts warn that unsubstantiated allegations against individuals or organizations could have legal consequences, particularly if they are perceived as inciting public distrust or making defamatory claims.
The development adds to ongoing national conversations about religious accountability, freedom of speech, and the influence of megachurches in Nigeria, where faith institutions play a significant role in social and political life.
As reactions continue to trail the statement, many Nigerians are calling for caution, urging public figures to balance free expression with responsibility, especially when addressing sensitive religious matters.
