Ibadan, Oyo State — A tragic road accident has claimed the life of a police dispatch rider attached to the convoy of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, after a petrol tanker rammed into the motorcade in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State. The incident occurred on Sunday, 23 December 2025, shortly after the convoy had picked up Mr. Akpabio from the Ibadan Airport following an official engagement in the state.

The deceased officer has been identified as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ibrahim Hussaini, a native of Kogi State, who had been part of the Senate President’s security detail since 2023 when Akpabio assumed office. According to Akpabio’s announcement on the floor of the Senate on Tuesday, the petrol tanker inexplicably collided with the convoy, and Hussaini was fatally injured. “Unfortunately, my dispatch rider was run over by a tanker driver, and his head was shattered,” the Senate President told lawmakers, describing the loss as a “tragic” sacrifice in the line of duty.

Hussaini was buried earlier on Tuesday in Kogi State, leaving behind two wives and four children. Akpabio paid tribute to the late officer’s dedication and courage, noting that Hussaini was due to retire next year and had served with distinction throughout his tenure.

In an emotional address to senators, Akpabio appealed to the heads of ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to consider the automatic employment of Hussaini’s children as a means of support. He also pledged that if there were no available government vacancies, he would personally ensure opportunities were found for them within his private ventures. “By the grace of God, I’m recommending two of his senior children for employment immediately in any parastatals that may wish to, otherwise I’ll employ them personally,” he told the Senate.

Following the disclosure, Senator Sunday Karimi (APC, Kogi West) raised a motion for personal explanation to formally present the accident to the Senate, prompting colleagues to observe a one‑minute silence in honour of Hussaini and another longtime legislative staffer who recently died. Karimi also shared that Hussaini had served faithfully in the convoy since Akpabio’s tenure began and reiterated condolences to his family and to the Nigeria Police Force.

The accident underscores persistent concerns about road safety on major expressways in Nigeria, where heavy vehicular traffic, including tankers transporting petroleum products, contributes to a high incidence of deadly collisions. Details surrounding the tanker’s loss of control and whether any traffic or mechanical violations contributed to the crash are yet to be officially disclosed by traffic authorities.

As security aides and political officials mourn the loss of DSP Hussaini, calls for enhanced road safety measures have gained renewed urgency, particularly for the protection of security personnel and civilian motorists alike during travel to official assignments and public duties.
