OMASI, ANAMBRA STATE — The people of Omasi in Ayamelum Local Government Area have peacefully concluded the election of a new President-General (PG), selecting Mr. Sunday Makor of Omasi-Uno as their unopposed leader. The election, marked by orderly participation and community consensus, followed months of tension and scrutiny over the management of the town’s affairs by the outgoing administration.

In the aftermath of the election, the community expressed strong disapproval of the former PG, Mr. Alfred Okafor, issuing a formal vote of no confidence. Residents criticized Okafor for his failure to account for funds handled during his tenure and alleged a pattern of unilateral decision-making. Members of the previous executive council—including the Financial Secretary and Secretary-General—submitted verbal reports detailing that Okafor had consolidated multiple leadership roles, effectively functioning as President-General, Financial Secretary, and Secretary-General simultaneously, without involving statutory officers in decision-making processes.

The reports highlighted what residents described as systemic governance failures under Okafor’s leadership, raising questions about transparency, fiscal accountability, and proper administrative oversight within the Town Union. Community members underscored that such concentration of power undermined collective governance and accountability mechanisms, and called for legal recourse to address alleged malfeasance.

During the General Meeting convened to formalize resolutions and transition leadership, the former PG and his Deputy abruptly left the hall, creating a temporary vacuum in leadership. Despite this disruption, the General Assembly resolved that the disbanded PG and his Deputy should face the law for alleged mismanagement and unlawful actions while in office.

Following the meeting, the people of Omasi organized a peaceful protest to reinforce their demands for justice and underscore the community’s commitment to accountability. Observers described the protest as orderly and reflective of the town’s dedication to civic engagement and the rule of law.

With Mr. Sunday Makor now assuming office, community leaders have pledged to restore transparent governance and inclusive decision-making. They emphasized the importance of engaging statutory officers in all Town Union affairs, ensuring fiscal responsibility, and maintaining open channels of communication with residents.

Analysts note that this transition reflects a growing trend in local governance within Anambra State, where communities are increasingly demanding accountability from elected leaders and taking proactive steps to safeguard public resources. By holding former leaders responsible and installing new, unopposed leadership, Omasi residents have signaled their determination to strengthen democratic practices at the grassroots level while maintaining peace and social cohesion.
