Nigerian security forces have clarified that the successful anti–crude oil theft operation carried out in Efiat Community, Akwa Ibom State, was conducted by the Nigerian Navy, not other security units as earlier reported.

On Thursday, 1 January 2026, personnel of the Nigerian Navy Forward Operating Base (FOB) Ibaka intercepted and arrested six suspected crude oil thieves during a routine anti-oil theft patrol. The suspects were apprehended in possession of drums laden with illegally refined Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), believed to be intended for distribution within the illegal fuel market.

Naval sources disclosed that the operation followed actionable intelligence on ongoing illicit petroleum activities in the coastal community. Acting swiftly, naval personnel moved into the area and arrested the suspects without resistance, preventing the illegal products from reaching buyers and further polluting the environment.

The Nigerian Navy described the operation as part of its sustained maritime security mandate aimed at curbing crude oil theft, illegal refining, and related economic sabotage across the Niger Delta. Akwa Ibom’s coastal and riverine terrain has increasingly attracted criminal networks seeking alternative routes for illegal petroleum operations, prompting intensified naval surveillance.

The arrested suspects have been taken into custody for preliminary investigation and are expected to be handed over to appropriate law enforcement agencies for further action. The seized illegally refined PMS will be handled in line with established procedures to ensure it does not re-enter circulation.

The Navy has reiterated its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s maritime domain, safeguarding critical national assets, and combating activities that undermine the economy and degrade the environment. It also called on coastal communities to continue supporting security operations by providing timely intelligence on suspicious movements and activities.

Officials stressed that community cooperation remains vital to the success of anti-oil theft operations, as intelligence from residents often enables precise and effective interventions.
