Sokoto State, Nigeria — Armed bandits launched a night raid on Tudun Mallam village in Wurno Local Government Area on Sunday, leaving at least two people with gunshot injuries and more than 10 women abducted, according to local residents and security analysts who shared details of the attack on social media and in preliminary news reports.
The assailants reportedly stormed the rural community late on Sunday evening, catching families off guard and carrying out violent attacks that sparked fear and chaos in the area. Those wounded during the raid were rushed to the Udutu Primary Health Care (PHC) facility for treatment, community sources said, adding that the full scope of injuries and the condition of the victims are still being assessed.
Residents also reported that the armed group looted farm equipment and other valuables during the raid, further compounding the distress felt across the community. Eyewitnesses and observers noted that abductions continued alongside the shooting, with women among those taken by the attackers as they fled into surrounding forested terrain.
The incident drew sharp criticism from local voices who argued that such attacks are occurring despite government claims of improved security measures in the region. Community members lamented the sense of vulnerability they feel, citing a broader pattern of insecurity that has included multiple kidnappings and violent raids across Sokoto and neighbouring states over recent years.
The Sokoto area, particularly in Wurno and adjoining local government areas, has seen a troubling trend of banditry and abductions. Similar attacks in the region earlier saw residents, including brides‑to‑be and other villagers, abducted during social events, with families struggling to secure prompt responses from security forces.
State police authorities had not issued an official statement on the latest raid at the time of reporting, and no arrests have been publicly announced. Residents are calling on security agencies to intensify patrols and community protection efforts, especially in remote villages that are frequently targeted by armed groups.
The attack highlights ongoing challenges confronting rural communities in parts of north‑western Nigeria, where bandit networks continue to exploit gaps in security coverage to carry out violent raids, kidnappings and looting. Local leaders and civil society advocates have repeatedly urged the government to strengthen preventive measures and ensure rapid response mechanisms are in place to protect civilians and deter future atrocities.
