JOS, Nigeria — A serious security incident in Plateau State has left the community on edge after three daughters of the Managing Director of the Plateau State Water Board were abducted by suspected gunmen in a brazen late‑night attack on the family home in the Rantya area of Jos South Local Government Area in the early hours of Monday.
According to multiple security sources, the incident unfolded at approximately 12:53 a.m. when residents near Dumac Suites, Rantya reported hearing sporadic gunshots reverberating through the neighbourhood. When security operatives responded to distress calls from locals, they discovered that unidentified armed assailants had forced their way into the compound of Engr. Apollos Samchi, the Managing Director of the Plateau State Water Board, and abducted his three daughters.
The abducted girls have been identified as Nanlop Samchi, Kyenret Samchi and Favour Samchi — all believed to be minors — although their exact ages have not yet been disclosed by authorities. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and there has been no immediate claim of responsibility from any criminal group.
During the assault, the family’s security guard, identified as Benard Makjwan, was shot in the stomach by the gunmen. He was rushed to Bingham University Teaching Hospital in Jos for urgent medical treatment, where he is said to be receiving care for his injuries.
Local law enforcement, in collaboration with the Nigerian military and other security agencies, has launched a coordinated operation to track down the perpetrators and ensure the safe rescue of the abducted children. Investigations are ongoing, and officials have appealed for calm as efforts to recover the girls intensify.
The abduction highlights the persistent security challenges confronting Plateau State, where armed attacks and kidnappings have become increasingly reported. In recent months and years, communities across the region have experienced similar threats, prompting stepped‑up operations by police and the armed forces to counter criminal networks involved in kidnapping, armed robbery and other violent acts.
Residents near the scene described waking up to the sound of gunshots and chaos, with many expressing fear and anger over the incident. Community leaders are calling on state authorities to intensify patrols and protection measures in vulnerable neighbourhoods to prevent similar attacks in the future.
Plateau State’s Commissioner of Police has yet to issue an official statement on the abduction, but security sources say that tactical units are already deployed across strategic points in and around Jos to intercept the kidnappers and secure the release of the three children.
As families and the broader community await updates, the focus remains on ensuring a swift and peaceful resolution to the crisis, while government officials and security experts underscore the need to bolster intelligence‑led policing to safeguard citizens from the growing threat of violent crime.
