GOMBE, Nigeria — The residence of the District Head of Tumu in Akko Local Government Area, Gombe State, has been transformed into an emergency shelter for hundreds of internally displaced persons (IDPs) fleeing violent attacks by armed bandits in nearby Galadima and Sabon Kaura communities. The influx underscores the growing security and humanitarian challenges in the region, where communities have been repeatedly targeted by criminal elements.

Eyewitness accounts describe scenes of distress as men, women and children arrive at the District Head’s compound, many appearing exhausted and traumatised. Families have reportedly travelled long distances to escape the attacks, leaving homes, property and livelihoods behind. Local authorities and community members have rapidly mobilised to provide temporary shelter, food, water and basic medical care, although resources are reportedly strained by the scale of the displacement.

The humanitarian needs are particularly urgent among women and children, some of whom are showing visible signs of trauma, dehydration, and exhaustion. Community leaders coordinating relief efforts have appealed for additional support from the state government, non-governmental organisations, and humanitarian agencies to address the immediate and ongoing needs of the displaced population.

Security sources confirmed that bandits recently carried out coordinated raids in Galadima and Sabon Kaura, prompting the mass displacement. While details on casualties are still emerging, local residents report widespread destruction of property and an atmosphere of fear that continues to affect neighbouring communities.

Aid coordination efforts at the District Head’s residence include the distribution of food rations, provision of blankets and bedding, and access to medical attention for those injured or in poor health. Volunteers and community members are also prioritising psychosocial support for children and other vulnerable individuals who have been deeply affected by the violence.

Authorities have called for enhanced security patrols in Akko Local Government Area and surrounding communities to prevent further attacks and to enable displaced families to eventually return safely to their homes. The situation highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive humanitarian response in Gombe State to address both the immediate needs of IDPs and the underlying security challenges fueling repeated displacement.
