The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has strongly condemned what it described as a brutal assault on one of its members, Dr. Adeniyi A., at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo, Ondo State.

In a press release dated February 5, 2026, and signed by its national leadership, NARD said the incident occurred while the doctor, a registrar in the Department of Internal Medicine, was on duty in the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital. According to the association, Dr. Adeniyi was physically attacked in the line of duty by a group of individuals alleged to be relatives of a surgical patient.

NARD described the attack as violent and unacceptable, stating that it represents a direct assault not only on the medical professional involved but also on the integrity of Nigeria’s healthcare system. The association emphasized that such incidents are particularly troubling because they occur within hospital premises, which are meant to be safe environments dedicated to preserving life, health, and dignity.

The association expressed concern over what it termed a recurring pattern of violence against healthcare workers across the country. It noted that the continued inadequacy of measures to protect medical personnel has emboldened individuals to resort to physical aggression against doctors and other health professionals. NARD stressed that this trend is dangerous, unlawful, and must be decisively addressed to prevent further harm to healthcare providers delivering essential services.

In response to the incident at FMC Owo, NARD issued a set of non-negotiable demands. These include full compensation for the pain, trauma, and suffering endured by the assaulted doctor; comprehensive coverage of all medical expenses arising from the incident without delay; and immediate strengthening of security infrastructure around entry points, clinical areas, and strategic posts within the hospital to prevent a recurrence.

The association also called for the prompt apprehension and diligent prosecution of all individuals involved in the attack, insisting that accountability is necessary to serve as a deterrent to others.

NARD warned that failure to meet its demands would compel the association to take all legitimate actions necessary to protect its members and defend the sanctity of medical practice in Nigeria. It reaffirmed its solidarity with the leadership and members of the FMC Owo chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors, pledging full institutional support as they pursue justice.

The statement hookup concluded with a call for the quick and complete recovery of Dr. Adeniyi, expressing hope that such an incident would not befall any healthcare worker again. The association’s message ended with the declaration: “Enough is enough.”

The press release was signed by Dr. Mohammad Usman Suleiman, President; Dr. Shuaibu Ibrahim, Secretary-General; and Dr. Abdulmajid Yahya Ibrahim, Publicity and Social Secretary of NARD.
