The Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has formally called on British authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure justice following the fatal stabbing of 20-year-old Nigerian student Khaleed Oladipo in Leicester, United Kingdom. The commission’s appeal reflects both grief and concern within the Nigerian diaspora community over the violent death of one of its young members.
Khaleed Oladipo, a second-year cybersecurity student at De Montfort University, was fatally stabbed near the city centre on Tuesday evening, suffering a stab wound to the chest and later dying in hospital. Police and family accounts indicate he was attacked as he was returning home, believed to be on his way after watching or preparing to watch a football match. Local law enforcement confirmed that an 18-year-old man has been charged with his murder and possession of an offensive weapon; court proceedings are ongoing.
In a statement disseminated by NiDCOM’s Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Dabiri-Erewa described Oladipo’s death as heartbreaking and a painful loss to both his immediate family and the broader Nigerian community, both in the homeland and abroad. The commission urged that “no stone is left unturned” in the investigation and that the perpetrators be brought to justice.
NiDCOM’s appeal emphasised the commission’s ongoing commitment to the welfare and protection of Nigerians in the diaspora community, noting that ensuring accountability in such tragic circumstances is central to safeguarding citizens abroad. The statement reaffirmed the need for clarity and resolution in the case, reflecting broader concerns about the safety of Nigerians studying or living overseas.
Authorities in Leicester, led by Leicestershire Police, have confirmed that the suspect, identified as Harper Dennis, 18, from London, has been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place in connection with Oladipo’s death. He is expected to appear in court as proceedings continue.
The tragic incident has prompted an outpouring of grief from Oladipo’s family and friends. In a tribute issued through police communications, his family described him as an “extremely loved son, brother, uncle, boyfriend and friend” and expressed profound sadness at his loss. They also thanked emergency services and members of the public who attempted to help him after the attack.
The Nigerian community and De Montfort University itself have expressed shock and sadness, with the university’s leadership offering support to students and staff affected by the incident. The broader investigation remains active, with police continuing to gather evidence and appeal to local witnesses for information.
