JIBIA, Katsina State — A violent bandit attack on a rural transport route in Jibia Local Government Area has heightened fears among border communities, following the abduction of five female passengers late Sunday night.

According to multiple resident accounts, armed bandits ambushed a commercial tricycle along a rural route near Kurfawa village, close to the Danbafullace area and the road leading toward the Dan‑Issah community in neighbouring Niger Republic. The driver, identified as Isiya Gaye, was reportedly stopped, his hands tied by the attackers in an attempt to abduct him but he managed to escape and raise the alarm.

Although official details from the Katsina State Police Command about this specific incident are not yet available from verified media outlets, Katsina’s border highways have in past months been scenes of frequent bandit attacks targeting travellers. Police statements confirm that armed bandits have repeatedly attempted to abduct passengers along rural and inter‑state routes in Jibia LGA, with security responses often mobilising local forces to rescue victims or foil kidnappings. Previous documented incidents include attempts to abduct occupants of commercial vehicles along the Katsina‑Magama and other rural roads in Jibia, with varying outcomes and police engagements.

The latest reported attack, in which only the five female passengers were taken while the driver escaped, has caused alarm among residents who rely on nighttime travel between rural communities and border towns for commerce and daily activities. Unlike some earlier confrontations where security forces were able to engage and rescue passengers, there are no official statements yet confirming whether police or military units responded or if active tracking of the abductors is underway.

Security challenges in Katsina State, particularly in rural border communities bordering Niger Republic, remain acute. Numerous reports from recent years show that armed gangs often block highways, open fire to stop vehicles and attempt kidnappings, especially on routes with limited security presence.

Local residents are calling for increased patrols and improved coordination between federal and state security forces to secure travel corridors and prevent further abductions. As of now, the whereabouts of the five abducted women are unknown, and authorities have urged anyone with credible information to report swiftly to the nearest police station.
