OYO, Nigeria — The Oyo State Police Command has successfully disrupted a suspected cult gathering in Oyo town, resulting in the arrest of three suspected cult members as part of its ongoing crackdown on cultism and violent crime. The operation highlights the Command’s proactive, intelligence-driven policing strategy.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, the arrests followed credible intelligence indicating that a secretive gathering was taking place at Bode Thomas Secondary School. Officers from the Atiba Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, observed a group of approximately thirty individuals dressed in black converging at the location. Upon sighting the police, the suspects dispersed into nearby bushes, allowing officers to apprehend three men: Jelili Taiwo Kazeem (20), Toheeb Adediran (25), and Ayomide Taiwo (23).
Investigations revealed that the gathering was reportedly organized to celebrate a member’s birthday. One of the suspects, Toheeb Adediran, who works as a commercial motorcycle (okada) rider, was found to have transported some members to the venue. Police recovered his motorcycle along with an axe and a black cap, believed to be associated with cult-related activities.
During questioning, the suspects admitted membership in the Aiye Confraternity, providing information on their roles and assisting investigators in tracing other members who fled the scene. The case has been transferred to the State Anti-Cultism Squad for further investigation and eventual prosecution.
The Commissioner of Police for Oyo State commended the Atiba Division for their swift and professional response and expressed appreciation to Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for his support and zero-tolerance stance on cultism and violent crime. Authorities reiterated that Oyo State will not become a haven for cult activities and pledged to continue intelligence-led operations, strategic patrols, and enforcement actions across the state.
Police also urged parents and guardians to engage with their wards, discouraging involvement in cultism and criminal gangs while emphasizing the serious legal and social consequences associated with such activities.
The suspects remain in police custody and are cooperating with ongoing investigations, which aim to apprehend other members of the group. The Command continues to encourage residents to provide credible intelligence to aid in maintaining security across Oyo State.
