SOKOTO — The Sultan of Sokoto has officially declared Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the first day of Ramadan for Muslims across Nigeria, following the confirmed sighting of the crescent moon.

In a statement released by the Sultanate Council, the spiritual leader emphasized that the announcement follows careful observation by Islamic scholars and local moon-sighting committees throughout the country. “The crescent moon has been sighted in different parts of Nigeria. Therefore, we hereby declare tomorrow, Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as the start of the holy month of Ramadan,” the statement said.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community. Observers abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn to sunset, focusing on spiritual purification and increased devotion.

The Sultan urged Muslims to use the month as an opportunity to strengthen faith, perform acts of charity, and promote unity and peace within their communities. He also advised adherence to public health protocols during congregational prayers and communal gatherings, especially in mosques and open prayer grounds.

Across Nigeria, various Islamic organisations and local mosques have welcomed the declaration and are preparing to mark the beginning of the fasting period. Educational campaigns and community programmes are being organised to ensure widespread awareness of fasting schedules and prayer times.

The announcement by the Sultan of Sokoto, a widely respected religious authority in Nigeria and spiritual leader of the country’s Sunni Muslim community, is traditionally regarded as a reference point for other states and communities in determining the official start of Ramadan.

This year’s observance is expected to include nightly Taraweeh prayers, communal iftars, and charitable initiatives aimed at supporting vulnerable populations. Religious leaders continue to encourage peaceful observance and reconciliation efforts during the holy month.
