A major fire outbreak has erupted at the Federal Secretariat complex in Abuja, causing panic among civil servants, visitors and commuters in the heart of Nigeria’s capital city. The blaze broke out on Monday morning, igniting flames and thick black smoke from Section C of the building, which houses the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

According to eyewitnesses and official statements, the fire was first noticed at around 8:20 a.m., when staff and visitors noticed smoke pouring from the affected section of the Secretariat. Videos and images circulating on social media showed thick plumes of black smoke rising from Block C of the complex, prompting alarm among workers who were evacuated to safety as emergency responders were alerted.

Officials from the media department of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service confirmed the incident, noting that the outbreak was limited to Section C of the Federal Secretariat building and that efforts were underway to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the complex. Emergency personnel from the Federal Fire Service were deployed to the scene and were actively working to extinguish the fire.

Panic spread quickly through the Secretariat early in the day, with many civil servants evacuating their offices in haste as smoke and flames became visible. Traffic congestion was reported in the vicinity, especially around the Federal Court of Appeal area, where roads were temporarily diverted to allow fire engines and emergency crews unobstructed access to the scene.

Firefighters from nearby Federal Fire Service stations, including the Garki and Wuse units, responded swiftly to the distress call received shortly after the fire began. According to the Federal Fire Service spokesman, crews were able to bring the blaze under control, dousing the flames and preventing the fire from engulfing other sections of the building.

As of the latest reports, there have been no confirmed casualties, and authorities said they were still working to assess the full extent of the damage within the affected section. The cause of the fire is not yet known, with investigators expected to launch an inquiry once the situation is fully contained.

Block C of the Federal Secretariat houses critical offices within the Nigerian civil service structure, including administrative departments responsible for coordinating the activities of federal civil servants across ministries, departments and agencies. The fire outbreak disrupted normal operations as staff were forced to evacuate and work was temporarily suspended in nearby offices while safety checks were carried out.

Abuja residents and commuters in the central business districts reported seeing large columns of smoke from several vantage points across the city, underscoring the significance of the blaze. Many workers shared that the evacuation occurred hastily as emergency alarms and urgent calls spread through the Secretariat corridors.

The Federal Fire Service played a central role in preventing further escalation of the incident, with firefighters seen at the scene throughout the morning battling hotspots and ensuring the flames were brought under control. Officials stressed that, despite the dramatic visuals, the emergency response was effective in containing the fire to the initial outbreak zone.

Authorities have not provided detailed figures regarding property loss or structural damage but said that a comprehensive assessment would be conducted once the fire is fully extinguished and the building is deemed safe for entry. In the meantime, investigations will focus on determining what sparked the blaze, whether mechanical, electrical or due to some other factor, and whether any negligence or safety protocol failures were involved.

The Federal Secretariat is one of Abuja’s key government complexes, housing offices that support the functions of Nigeria’s civil service and federal bureaucracy. Fire incidents at such high-profile locations are relatively rare but prompt swift responses from emergency services due to the concentration of personnel and sensitive government functions.

Workers and visitors who were evacuated from the building expressed relief that the fire did not spread further, but many also described moments of fear and confusion as smoke spread rapidly through hallways and fire alarms sounded. Some noted that clear escape routes and orderly evacuation contributed to preventing injuries despite the heavy smoke.

Officials from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service said they would release further updates as more information becomes available, including any interim assessments of damage and preliminary findings from fire investigators. Government ministries and agencies operating in neighbouring blocks were placed on alert to monitor any secondary risks and to resume operations only after safety clearances are issued.

This incident adds to a series of fire emergencies that have occurred at government and commercial buildings in Abuja over the years, though none in recent memory have matched the scale of this morning’s outbreak at the Federal Secretariat. Authorities continue to urge calm as the situation stabilises and the cause of the blaze is investigated.
