Security operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Yobe State have made a significant breakthrough in their efforts to curb motorcycle theft and related crimes, arresting a key suspect believed to be part of an interstate motorcycle theft network operating across parts of northern Nigeria. The development forms part of a broader crackdown on criminal syndicates who have for months targeted motorcycles, a vital means of transportation and livelihood for many residents in the region.

According to the Yobe State Police Command, the suspect, identified as 27-year-old Lukman Yunusa, was arrested following detailed intelligence gathering by officers attached to the Potiskum Divisional Police Headquarters. Operatives acted on credible leads pointing to Yunusa’s alleged involvement in motorcycle theft, burglary, and other property crimes spanning Yobe, Gombe, and Bauchi states.

Police Public Relations Officer Superintendent Dungus Abdulkarim said the arrest took place on March 3, 2026, at about 11 a.m., after a coordinated operation. Officers descended on a location in Potiskum, a town strategically located along the Damaturu–Kano Expressway, where Yunusa was apprehended. Preliminary investigations revealed that Yunusa had specialized in stealing motorcycles and housebreaking, carrying out these crimes for financial gain.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly confessed to his alleged criminal activities and assisted investigators in identifying and recovering five motorcycles believed to be stolen. Police say these bikes were part of an estimated ten motorcycles the suspect allegedly stole since beginning his operations. The recovered motorcycles were reportedly taken from various locations across the three states, highlighting the interstate nature of the theft syndicate.

Investigators are now working to determine whether Yunusa was acting alone or as part of a larger criminal network that specializes in stealing motorcycles and trafficking them across state lines. Police suspect that stolen motorcycles are sometimes altered, repainted, or otherwise disguised before being resold or transported to distant markets, making it challenging to trace and recover stolen property.

Yobe State, like many other northern states in Nigeria, relies heavily on motorcycles for everyday transportation, commerce, and agricultural work. The popularity of these vehicles, particularly among commercial riders locally known as “okada” operators, has made them frequent targets for theft rings. Criminals often exploit limited night-time surveillance, isolated roads, and gaps in law enforcement coverage to carry out such operations.

Community reactions to the arrest were mixed, with many residents expressing relief that police had acted effectively to disrupt a theft network that had caused financial hardship for victims. Motorcycle theft not only strips owners of a vital personal or business asset, it also affects families whose incomes depend on daily operations of commercial vehicles. Some community members said they hoped the arrest would serve as a deterrent to other criminal elements.

The Yobe State police have urged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious activities and individuals, noting that community intelligence has often been instrumental in locating suspects and recovering stolen property. They encouraged motorcycle owners to maintain documentation such as registration papers, identifiable markings, and any security features that could aid law enforcement in tracing and recovering vehicles if stolen.

Authorities also reiterated that the fight against motorcycle theft requires ongoing cooperation between police, local communities, and other security agencies. Sustained intelligence-led operations, regular patrols, and swift responses to reports of theft or burglary are seen as central to dismantling theft rings and reducing the incidence of such crimes.

Yunusa remains in police custody as investigations continue. Law enforcement officials say further arrests or recoveries may follow as they pursue outstanding leads and work to dismantle any wider syndicate responsible for motorcycle crime across the region.
