Residents near a collapsed school building in Aguda, Ogba, Lagos, have been urged to vacate their homes temporarily as authorities conduct safety inspections and structural assessments following the collapse of a fourโ€‘storey building housing Yemco Daycare Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College.

The building gave way shortly after students and staff had evacuated, preventing fatalities, though several students sustained minor injuries during the evacuation and were treated at nearby hospitals. Emergency teams from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) secured the area, ensuring no one was trapped and initiating investigations into the cause of the collapse.

LASBCA has advised occupants of neighbouring buildings to vacate temporarily while thorough safety checks are conducted, noting that parts of the collapsed building had been undergoing renovations, which may have contributed to the structural failure. The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and other state authorities are on site to assess the damage and guide immediate safety measures.

Authorities have emphasised strict compliance with building regulations and the need for proper approvals for all construction and renovation work. Residents and parents have been urged to cooperate fully with safety directives and avoid returning to vacated buildings until engineers certify them as safe. The incident underscores the need for rigorous enforcement of safety standards in Lagos, where rapid construction can sometimes outpace regulatory oversight.
