A 27-year-old Nigerian student was arrested in South Africa after authorities discovered a significant quantity of cocaine in his possession, valued at over R600,000, approximately ₦49 million. The arrest, which took place in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, forms part of a broader investigation into organised drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
According to South African authorities, the student was apprehended in the Umbilo area following coordinated operations involving the Metro Police Tactical Support Unit, the Metro Police Task Team, and the South African Police Service’s KwaZulu-Natal Counter Narcotics Unit. Officers initially stopped the suspect and discovered quantities of high-purity cocaine hidden in a sock as he exited his vehicle. A subsequent search of his residence revealed additional narcotics, confirming the scale of the offence.
The student, who entered South Africa on a student visa and is enrolled at a local tertiary institution, remains under investigation. Authorities noted that even after his arrest, funds continued to be deposited into his bank account, prompting a referral to the Asset Forfeiture Unit for review of any assets potentially linked to illegal activity.
Law enforcement agencies indicated that the arrest is part of an ongoing probe targeting an organised syndicate, with several other suspects already detained in connection with the case. Officials have emphasized that the seizure points to involvement in a structured distribution network rather than simple possession.
