BREAKING: DSS Detains Former Kaduna Governor El‑Rufai After Court Fixes April 14 for Bail Ruling

Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Wednesday took into custody former Kaduna State governor Nasir el‑Rufai shortly after proceedings at the Federal High Court in Kaduna, as the court adjourned the ruling on his bail application to April 14, 2026. The dramatic development emerged from a high‑profile corruption case that has drawn significant public and legal attention across Nigeria.

El‑Rufai, who has been facing trial on allegations of corruption brought by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), was brought to court alongside his legal team on Wednesday morning for continued hearings on his pending bail application. The former governor’s legal representatives had argued the application, and the court subsequently reserved judgment on the matter, setting April 14 as the date to determine whether he should be granted bail.

Moments after the hearing concluded, however, a contingent of DSS operatives, who had maintained a substantial presence around the court premises, promptly escorted El‑Rufai into custody and transferred him into a waiting vehicle, reportedly heading towards Abuja. This abrupt action followed the adjournment and came despite the bail application remaining undecided. Observers described the scene as tense, with the security deployment around the courthouse significantly heightened ahead of what had been anticipated as a pivotal judicial session.

Lead defence counsel, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Oluwole Iyamu (SAN), spoke to journalists after the proceedings, confirming that the Federal High Court had fixed April 14 for ruling on the bail application. Iyamu expressed cautious optimism, noting that arguments from both the defence and prosecution had been fully presented to the court, and that they looked forward to the upcoming decision. He also highlighted that El‑Rufai’s legal team is prepared for another related matter scheduled to be heard on April 10 at a different Federal High Court in Abuja, describing it as a separate DSS‑linked case.

The arrest and detention of El‑Rufai by the DSS occurred against the backdrop of multiple legal fronts on which he is engaged. Earlier this week, he and a co‑defendant appeared before a Kaduna State High Court in Kawo on separate ICPC charges that include alleged abuse of office, fraud, and conferring undue advantage, but proceedings were stalled and adjourned to April 10 due to procedural issues. These state charges remain distinct from the matters before the Federal High Court.

El‑Rufai’s ongoing legal challenges stem from a series of allegations concerning the conversion and possession of public property, money laundering, and other financial improprieties linked to his time as governor. He was arraigned on a ten‑count corruption charge by the ICPC on March 24, 2026, and has consistently pleaded not guilty to the accusations. His detention and trial process have been subject to intense public and political scrutiny, as well as heated debate among legal commentators and civil society actors.

The involvement of the DSS in rounding up El‑Rufai immediately after court proceedings, rather than the ICPC, has raised questions among legal analysts about procedural norms and the roles of Nigeria’s security and prosecutorial agencies in high‑profile cases. At present, there has been no formal explanation from either the DSS or the judiciary regarding the specific grounds for the DSS’s action following the bail hearing’s adjournment.

The sequence of events comes on the heels of earlier developments in the case. El‑Rufai was recently granted temporary administrative bail by the ICPC on compassionate grounds to attend his mother’s funeral in late March, but was returned to custody upon completion of those proceedings. His legal team has also pursued separate fundamental rights actions in court, some of which have been altered or withdrawn as part of procedural adjustments in ongoing litigation.

Public reactions to the former governor’s detention have underscored the polarized perceptions surrounding his prosecution. Supporters view the legal process as a necessary exercise in accountability for public office holders, while critics caution that due process and transparent judicial conduct must be upheld to maintain confidence in Nigeria’s rule of law. Observers say the April 14 bail ruling will be a critical juncture in determining the next phase of El‑Rufai’s legal journey.

As of this report, there has been no official comment from the DSS, ICPC, or the Federal High Court regarding El‑Rufai’s detention following the adjourned bail proceeding. The legal community and the public alike are awaiting further developments as the matter progresses through the judiciary.
