The Kogi State Police Command has officially commissioned a newly constructed police station in Edumo community, Kabba/Bunnu Local Government Area, as part of efforts to strengthen security presence and enhance effective policing at the grassroots.
The commissioning ceremony was led by the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State Command, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, PSC, MNI. He highlighted that the establishment of the facility aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, PSC, NPM, to deepen community policing and improve service delivery across the country.
During the ceremony, CP Kankarofi commended the Edumo community for their support and cooperation, stressing that effective policing relies heavily on collaboration between law enforcement and the public. He assured residents that the police are committed to safeguarding lives and property within the area.
He further urged community members to take ownership of the facility, protect it, and continue providing timely and credible information to security agencies to assist in crime prevention and detection. The Commissioner emphasized that community engagement is a critical component in ensuring safety and maintaining public order.
Local leaders and stakeholders welcomed the development, viewing the station as a landmark advancement in the government’s efforts to tighten security in Kabba/Bunnu and surrounding areas. They noted the challenges the community has faced, including theft, farm encroachments, and occasional disorderly conduct, and expressed optimism that the new station would facilitate faster police response and deter criminal activities.
The establishment of the Edumo station is part of broader community policing initiatives under CP Kankarofi’s leadership. Earlier initiatives included commissioning additional police outposts in urban areas of Lokoja to improve coverage and operational readiness, especially in areas where residents had previously raised concerns about delayed responses from conventional police formations.
CP Kankarofi’s tenure has also focused on proactive security measures, including campaigns against kidnapping, banditry, and cult-related activities, while fostering trust between the police and communities. Authorities have urged residents to partner with law enforcement to tackle security threats collectively.
The move to expand police infrastructure and community engagement comes amid ongoing security challenges in parts of Kogi State. Past incidents, including kidnappings and ambush attacks, highlighted the need for stronger, more responsive policing, particularly in rural areas. In addition, the government has expanded other security assets such as Quick Response Units to facilitate rapid deployment in emergencies and enhance coordination with federal security agencies.
Security experts note that the presence of police stations within communities improves intelligence sharing and cooperative efforts to prevent crime. Sustained effectiveness, however, depends on adequate staffing, logistics, and ongoing engagement with community leaders to ensure policing reflects local needs and vulnerabilities.
For residents of Edumo and Kabba/Bunnu, the commissioning of the new police station represents a renewed promise of protection, collaboration, and strengthened partnership between the police and the communities they serve. Authorities hope the initiative will foster an environment where residents can live and work without fear, supported by a responsive and community-oriented policing framework.
