Tragedy struck early Thursday morning along the Okolowo–Jebba expressway in Kwara State when a fatal road collision claimed the lives of six passengers and left 12 others injured, in what may be one of the most serious crashes on that major transport corridor in recent months. The accident occurred at about 6:00 a.m. on April 2, near the Danjuma Bakery area of the highway, a busy stretch that connects communities in Kwara with northern and southern routes across Nigeria.
According to official and on‑scene accounts, a Toyota Hummer bus carrying about 18 to 19 passengers was travelling northwards — reportedly from Lagos toward Katsina — when it collided with a stationary truck parked at the roadside. The impact was devastating, immediately killing six passengers on board. Among the survivors, 12 sustained varying degrees of injuries ranging from fractures and cuts to suspected internal trauma. They were rapidly transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention, while others walked away with lesser injuries or unhurt.
Witnesses said the scene became chaotic shortly after the crash as other motorists, residents, and emergency responders rushed to help extricate victims, administer first aid, and clear the wreckage. Road safety officials later confirmed that the crash involved multiple occupants — including adult males, at least one adult female, and a child — underscoring the human cost of the tragedy.
Preliminary assessments by the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kwara State suggest that driver fatigue, excessive speed, and loss of control may have been significant contributing factors to the crash. These factors are often cited in similar highway accidents when heavy vehicles or buses are involved in early‑morning travel, especially along long stretches of expressway with limited resting points.
The Okolowo–Jebba expressway has long been a critical but hazardous route for travellers, connecting southwestern, north‑central, and northern Nigerian states. Residents and transport officials have previously raised concerns about persistent safety issues along this corridor, including speeding, insufficient traffic control measures, and a lack of adequate resting areas for long‑distance drivers.
Local authorities and community members have also, at times, demanded safety enhancements such as speed bumps, better signage, and stricter enforcement of traffic laws to reduce the frequency of fatal road crashes. These calls grew louder after a series of previous incidents on similar sections of the route, including separate crashes that claimed lives and prompted public outcry for government action.
Road traffic accidents remain a persistent challenge across Nigeria, with data from safety agencies showing thousands of crashes annually, many resulting in death or serious injury. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, the FRSC recorded more than 2,600 road traffic crashes nationwide, resulting in nearly 1,600 deaths, highlighting how widespread and deadly such accidents have become.
In response to Thursday’s crash, the FRSC and local police urged motorists to observe strict road safety protocols, including avoiding over‑speeding, ensuring adequate rest before long trips, and maintaining safe distances from roadside obstacles or parked vehicles. Emergency services also reiterated the importance of early notification to authorities when breakdowns occur, to reduce the risk of collision from fast‑moving traffic.
Families of the deceased have begun mourning their loved ones, and local officials indicated that bodies of the victims would be released to relatives after necessary documentation and coroner procedures. The injured were reported stable in local medical facilities, receiving treatment for their injuries.
As investigations continue, transport and safety authorities said they would analyse the crash more fully to determine any systemic causes and whether infrastructure, vehicle conditions, or operator behaviour contributed to the incident. Meanwhile, calls for improved safety measures along Nigeria’s expressways continue, as commuters and residents seek to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
