A traditional ruler and five other individuals have been killed in a violent attack by suspected gunmen in Imo State, southeastern Nigeria, in what has deepened concerns over persistent insecurity in the region. The incident occurred in Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area and has prompted a major security response involving police tactical units and other agencies deployed to the affected communities.
According to multiple security and local sources, the victims included the traditional ruler of Ochia Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Paulinus Ekwueme, along with five others who were traveling with him at the time of the attack. Those killed were reportedly members of his immediate entourage, including aides and a driver. Authorities say the monarch was ambushed along a rural route between Assa and Ochia communities shortly after returning from a trip.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the attackers blocked the convoy and opened fire, killing occupants before setting vehicles and some of the victims ablaze. Residents who arrived at the scene described a horrifying aftermath, with burnt vehicles and bodies left on the roadside. The brutality of the attack has intensified fear across surrounding communities, many of which have experienced similar incidents in recent years.
