Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have arrested several suspects in connection with the abduction of a traffic enforcement officer, following a coordinated security operation that also uncovered other traffic-related offences in different parts of the state. The arrests were made after intelligence-led tracking efforts by police units responding to a violent incident involving a senior traffic warden in Akure.

According to confirmed police accounts, the incident occurred on April 3, 2026, at Cathedral Junction in Akure, where a vehicle was stopped for violating traffic rules. The traffic officer, identified as a senior warden attached to a state traffic enforcement agency, reportedly attempted to escort the driver to a police station for further action. However, the driver allegedly sped off with the officer still inside the vehicle, effectively abducting him and taking him toward an unknown destination.

The situation triggered an emergency response after the officer raised an alarm. Police patrol teams from the Fanibi Division were quickly mobilised and began a pursuit operation across Akure. The vehicle was later intercepted at Winners Chapel Junction along Ondo Road, where the traffic officer was safely rescued without further harm. The suspects were arrested at the scene and taken into custody along with the vehicle used in the incident.

Police authorities said the rescue marked the beginning of a broader investigation into a network of traffic-related crimes and assaults on enforcement officers. The Ondo State Police Command explained that the arrests were part of separate but related incidents involving traffic violations, reckless driving, obstruction of law enforcement, and assault on officers carrying out their duties.

In a related development within the same timeframe, police also intercepted another vehicle along the Oba-Ile axis of Akure during a routine patrol operation. That incident involved motorists who allegedly drove against traffic and resisted arrest. One of the suspects reportedly assaulted a police officer during the confrontation, while an accomplice fled the scene. The arrested suspect was taken into custody and later provided statements that assisted investigators.

Police spokespersons in Ondo State stated that all suspects connected to the incidents were undergoing interrogation and would be charged to court upon completion of investigations. Authorities emphasised that the enforcement actions were part of ongoing efforts to strengthen road safety compliance and reduce incidents of violence against officers.

Security officials noted that the abduction case, although resolved quickly, highlights a growing concern over the risks faced by traffic and road enforcement personnel in Nigeria. In recent years, enforcement officers across several states have increasingly been exposed to hostile encounters with motorists, ranging from verbal assaults to physical attacks and, in rare cases, abductions or kidnappings during enforcement operations.

In Ondo State specifically, police say they have intensified surveillance and patrols along major highways and urban intersections in response to rising cases of traffic violations and resistance to enforcement. The command has also strengthened collaboration with local transport authorities to ensure stricter compliance with road safety regulations.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects involved in the Akure incident may have acted impulsively during an enforcement stop, although authorities are still examining whether the act was premeditated or part of a wider pattern of criminal behaviour. Police sources say further arrests cannot be ruled out as investigations expand to identify any additional accomplices or related offences.

Community reactions in Akure have been mixed, with residents expressing relief at the safe rescue of the traffic officer while also raising concerns about increasing lawlessness on public roads. Some stakeholders have called for stricter penalties against individuals who assault or obstruct enforcement officers, arguing that such actions undermine public safety and the rule of law.

The Ondo State Police Command has urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and report suspicious behaviour, especially incidents involving violent resistance to lawful enforcement. Officials also reiterated that attacks on law enforcement personnel would be treated as serious criminal offences under Nigerian law and prosecuted accordingly.

As investigations continue, authorities say the arrested suspects remain in custody and are assisting with ongoing inquiries aimed at uncovering the full circumstances surrounding the abduction attempt and related traffic offences. Police have assured the public that all individuals involved will face prosecution once investigations are concluded.

The incident adds to a broader national conversation about road discipline, enforcement challenges, and the safety of officers tasked with maintaining order on Nigeria’s busy road networks. Security agencies continue to emphasise the importance of cooperation between motorists and enforcement officials to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
