After nearly three years of internal division and organizational paralysis, farmers in Ekiti State have elected a new set of executives, effectively ending a prolonged leadership crisis that had disrupted agricultural coordination and weakened the collective voice of farmers across the state.
The breakthrough followed months of consultations, mediation efforts, and negotiations involving key stakeholders within the farming community, traditional leaders, and government representatives. The electoral process, which was closely monitored, was structured to ensure transparency and broad acceptance among previously opposing factions.
The crisis began around 2023 after disagreements emerged over leadership positions within the farmers’ association. The dispute eventually escalated into the formation of parallel leadership structures, each claiming legitimacy. This fragmentation created confusion over representation and significantly affected the association’s ability to engage effectively with government institutions, development partners, and private sector actors involved in agriculture.
During the period of division, many farmers reportedly lost access to key benefits, including subsidized agricultural inputs, extension services, and financial support programmes typically facilitated through organized farmer groups. In their acceptance remarks, members of the new executive team pledged to prioritize unity, inclusiveness, and accountability. Security concerns within rural farming communities are also expected to feature prominently in the association’s agenda. Although Ekiti State has remained relatively stable compared to some other regions, farmers have continued to report issues such as theft, land disputes, and occasional disruptions to farming activities.
Stakeholders have welcomed the resolution of the crisis, describing it as a critical step toward revitalizing the agricultural sector in the state. Experts note that effective farmer associations play a key role in bridging the gap between policymakers and grassroots producers, ensuring that agricultural interventions are both practical and impactful.
Government officials have signaled readiness to re-engage with the association following the emergence of a unified leadership, a move expected to facilitate the rollout of development programmes, training initiatives, and funding schemes aimed at boosting food production.
The resolution comes at a time when Nigeria is placing increased emphasis on food security and local agricultural production. States with strong farming communities, such as Ekiti, are expected to play a vital role in achieving these national objectives.
Observers, however, caution that sustaining the current unity will require deliberate efforts by the new leadership to manage internal differences and maintain open communication with members. The long-term success of the transition will depend on the ability of the executives to deliver on their promises and restore confidence within the farming community.
For many farmers, the election marks the end of a difficult period and the beginning of a new chapter focused on cooperation, productivity, and growth.
