The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a suspected phone thief at Fayose Market in Ado-Ekiti and recovered two stolen mobile phones in an operation that followed credible intelligence received by operatives on April 16, 2026, at about 5:30 pm, according to a statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu.

It was gathered that officers of the Ado Central Divisional Police Headquarters acted swiftly after receiving the tip-off, which indicated that a man was attempting to sell mobile phones suspected to have been recently stolen within the busy Fayose Market area, a commercial hub known for high daily trading activity in Ado-Ekiti.

Operatives were immediately deployed to the location, where they arrested the suspect identified as Omoyeni Sesan, a 32-year-old man, without resistance, and recovered two mobile devices, a Redmi Android phone and an Itel phone, both of which were reasonably suspected to have been stolen.

According to police findings, the suspect later confessed during interrogation that he stole the two phones from a cyber café located within the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, a development that further assisted investigators in tracing the rightful owners of the recovered devices.

The command confirmed that the victims of the theft have been identified as students of the institution, and arrangements have been made for the recovered phones to be formally handed over to them after completion of necessary administrative procedures.

SP Sunday Abutu further stated that the suspect will be charged to court upon the conclusion of ongoing investigation, emphasizing the command’s commitment to ensuring that criminal elements are brought to justice and that stolen property is recovered and returned to rightful owners without delay.

The police command also used the opportunity to call on members of the public to remain vigilant and continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies, noting that community cooperation remains a critical factor in preventing and addressing criminal activities across Ekiti State.

Fayose Market in Ado-Ekiti is one of the busiest commercial centres in Ekiti State, attracting traders, students, and residents from across the city, and has in recent years experienced occasional incidents of petty theft and pickpocketing, prompting increased police visibility and surveillance in the area as part of broader efforts to strengthen public safety in high-density trading environments.

Security analysts have noted that phone theft cases in urban centres like Ado-Ekiti are often linked to opportunistic criminal activity, with suspects targeting cyber cafés, markets, and student-populated areas where mobile devices are frequently used and temporarily unattended, making such locations vulnerable despite ongoing law enforcement patrols and awareness campaigns.

In response to these challenges, the Ekiti State Police Command has consistently emphasized community policing, urging residents and traders to provide timely intelligence and report suspicious behaviour, while also strengthening rapid response mechanisms to ensure swift intervention in cases of theft, assault, or other criminal activities within public spaces.

Legal proceedings in such cases typically involve arraignment before a magistrate or high court depending on the severity of the charges, with suspects facing penalties under applicable provisions of Nigerian criminal law relating to theft, receiving stolen property, and unlawful possession, subject to the outcome of investigation and prosecutorial review.

Residents of Ado-Ekiti have expressed cautious relief following the arrest, with many acknowledging the importance of sustained police presence in busy markets and educational hubs, while also calling for continued efforts to reduce theft-related incidents and improve overall security conditions in commercial and academic environments across the state capital.

Investigators are also looking into whether the suspect may be part of a wider network involved in targeting student-owned devices around tertiary institutions in Ado-Ekiti, although authorities have stated that no confirmed links to organized criminal syndicates have been established at this stage of the investigation.

Cyber cafés within university environments have increasingly become focal points for both digital access and occasional petty crime, prompting administrators and security stakeholders to call for improved monitoring systems, user awareness, and stricter supervision of electronic devices within such facilities to reduce vulnerability to theft.

The arrest has also been described by security officials as part of a broader deterrence strategy aimed at discouraging street-level theft and improving confidence in law enforcement presence in commercial districts, particularly in areas with high youth population and frequent economic activity.

Officials further noted that recovered stolen items are typically documented, verified, and returned to their rightful owners following proper identification procedures, a process designed to ensure accountability, transparency, and public trust in policing operations across the state.

Ekiti State has generally been regarded as one of the relatively safer states in the South-West region, although authorities acknowledge that incidents of petty theft, phone snatching, and related crimes continue to pose challenges in urban centres, particularly around markets, transport hubs, and educational institutions where population density is high and surveillance is more difficult to maintain consistently.

The latest development in Ado-Ekiti therefore reinforces ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to maintain order in public spaces, while also highlighting the importance of community vigilance and timely reporting in supporting effective policing and ensuring that stolen property is recovered and offenders are brought to justice in accordance with the law.

Security officials maintain that sustained collaboration between police operatives, intelligence units, and members of the public will remain central to reducing crime rates in Ado-Ekiti, especially in densely populated commercial areas, as law enforcement continues to adapt its strategies to emerging patterns of urban crime and ensure that preventive policing remains effective across all divisions of the command.

Security officials further reiterated that public cooperation through prompt information sharing, vigilance in marketplaces, and responsible use of communication channels significantly enhances the ability of law enforcement agencies to respond quickly to emerging threats and prevent minor criminal activities from escalating into more serious security breaches within communities across urban and semi-urban areas of the state over time in Ekiti State.
