Troops of Operation Wutan Daji under the 33 Artillery Brigade have carried out a major clearance operation against suspected bandit networks in parts of Bauchi State, dismantling key camps, recovering weapons and rescuing kidnapped victims in what military authorities describe as a significant operational success.

The coordinated offensive, conducted in Kumbodoro Forest and Kumbodoro Village, targeted entrenched criminal enclaves believed to have served as operational bases for armed groups involved in kidnapping, extortion and violent attacks across the region. Security sources confirmed that the operation was executed with the support of the air component, underscoring a growing reliance on joint land-air strategies in Nigeria’s counter-banditry campaign.

According to military accounts, several camps linked to the bandits, including those associated with a figure identified as Azuge, were successfully overrun during the operation. The camps, described as well-established hideouts within the forest terrain, were reportedly used for planning attacks, holding abducted victims and storing weapons and supplies.

During the assault, troops engaged the suspected bandits in armed confrontations, leading to the neutralisation of multiple fighters. While exact casualty figures were not officially disclosed, military officials indicated that the outcome significantly disrupted the operational capacity of the groups in the area.

A key outcome of the operation was the rescue of eight individuals who had been held captive by the bandits. The victims, whose identities were not immediately released, were said to have been found during the systematic sweep of the cleared camps. They are currently receiving medical attention and undergoing debriefing as part of post-rescue procedures.

The military also reported the destruction of several structures within the camps, including makeshift shelters and storage facilities believed to have supported the logistics of the criminal network. The destruction of these facilities is seen as part of a broader effort to deny armed groups the ability to regroup and re-establish operational bases in forested areas.

A comprehensive search of the locations led to the recovery of a cache of weapons and equipment. Items seized included rifles, locally fabricated dane guns, ammunition magazines and communication devices. Troops also recovered military-style uniforms, mobile phones, ATM cards and other materials believed to have been used in coordinating operations and managing proceeds from criminal activities.

Security analysts note that the presence of communication devices and financial instruments among the recovered items highlights the evolving structure of bandit groups, which increasingly combine traditional armed violence with organised financial and logistical networks. The recovery of such materials is expected to aid intelligence gathering and potentially lead to further arrests or operations targeting associated networks.

Operation Wutan Daji is one of several ongoing military initiatives aimed at addressing banditry and related security threats in northern Nigeria. While the operation has been most active in the North-West, its reach has extended into parts of the North-East, including Bauchi State, where authorities have reported growing concerns about the movement of armed groups across state boundaries.

The latest operation reflects an intensified effort by the Nigerian military to sustain pressure on these groups through clearance missions targeting forest strongholds, which have long provided cover and strategic advantage to bandits. Forested areas such as Kumbodoro have been identified as critical nodes in the operational geography of these groups, often serving as transit routes and staging grounds for attacks.

Military officials have emphasized that such operations are part of a broader strategy combining direct engagement with intelligence-driven actions aimed at dismantling the networks that support banditry. The integration of air support in the Kumbodoro operation is seen as a key factor in its success, enabling troops to locate and strike targets more effectively within difficult terrain.

The development comes amid ongoing efforts by the federal government to curb insecurity across multiple regions, where banditry, kidnapping and insurgent activities have posed persistent challenges to civilian safety and economic stability. In recent months, authorities have reiterated their commitment to strengthening military operations while also exploring complementary measures such as community engagement and intelligence sharing.

Local sources in Bauchi State have reported increased military presence in the affected areas following the operation, with troops maintaining patrols to prevent the return of displaced bandit elements. Residents have expressed cautious optimism, noting that sustained security operations will be necessary to ensure lasting stability.

Despite the reported success, security experts caution that the fluid nature of bandit groups means that continued vigilance and coordinated action will be required. Armed groups often adapt quickly, relocating to new areas or reconstituting networks after losing established bases.

Nevertheless, the dismantling of the Kumbodoro camps and the rescue of kidnapped victims mark a notable development in ongoing security efforts. The operation not only disrupts immediate threats but also contributes to broader intelligence and enforcement objectives aimed at weakening the infrastructure of organised criminal groups operating in the region.

Authorities have indicated that follow-up operations are likely, as security forces seek to capitalize on the momentum and pursue remaining elements of the networks. For affected communities, the success of the operation represents a measure of relief, even as the broader challenge of insecurity continues to demand sustained and coordinated responses.
