The Ondo State Police Command has rescued a 13-year-old girl and arrested two men over suspected child trafficking in the state.
Police spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said the suspects were intercepted on April 23, 2026, at about 6:44 p.m. at the Owena checkpoint during a joint security operation involving police officers and military personnel.
According to the command, the suspects were travelling in a Toyota Hummer 18-seater commercial bus from Lagos to Abuja when security operatives stopped and searched the vehicle.
During the inspection, officers discovered the teenage girl in the custody of the two men. Police said the suspects were unable to provide satisfactory information regarding the child’s identity, destination, or their relationship with her, leading to suspicion of child trafficking.
The two men were immediately taken into custody, while the girl was rescued and placed under protective care.
Authorities said the matter has been transferred to the Gender-Based Offences Unit of the Ondo State Police Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Police did not release the identity of the rescued child in line with child protection procedures.
The command said investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the case and whether other persons were involved.
The rescue highlights continuing efforts by security agencies to combat child trafficking and protect vulnerable minors along major transit routes in Nigeria.
