Former Senator and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Comrade Shehu Sani, has sparked a heated political debate by dismissing the massive grassroots support for former presidential candidate Peter Obi as a "drama" driven largely by tribal sentiments, while confidently predicting that President Bola Tinubu will secure re-election in 2027. Sani made the incendiary remarks during a recent episode of “The Honest Bunch Podcast,” where he appeared alongside human rights activist Deji Adeyanju to discuss the state of the nation and its leadership.

According to Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the National Assembly, the enthusiasm surrounding Peter Obi does not represent a genuine desire for political change but is rather an emotional wave rooted in ethnic affiliation. "The support for Peter Obi is drama, many of those supporting him are people who come from his ethnic background," Sani was quoted as saying. He further argued that the opposition candidate offers no real alternative to the current administration. "If Obi becomes the President of Nigeria today, nothing changes, everything remains the same," he added. The former senator doubled down on his critique, asserting that all the major political figures in the country, including Obi, President Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, are cut from the same cloth.

"Peter Obi, Obasanjo, Atiku, and Tinubu are people who come from the same ideological perspective. They are people who share the same political thinking," Sani declared. He dismissed the idea that a change in party or personality would alter the nation's trajectory, suggesting that Nigerians are being misled by "recycled narratives." Projecting ahead to the 2027 general election, the APC stalwart expressed unwavering confidence in the ruling party's grip on power. "Tinubu will win the 2027 elections; the choice we have is between Satan and the devil," Sani said, framing the contest as a choice between two similar evils rather than a transformative event.

Sani’s assessment of the opposition appears rooted in his belief that Nigeria's political class is ideologically homogeneous. He dismissed the purported ideological differences between the Labour Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the same set of ideas governs all three. While the former lawmaker attempted to pivot to broader criticism of political leadership, his central argument remained that President Tinubu retains a significant structural advantage heading into the 2027 polls.

However, Sani’s claims were immediately met with fierce backlash from prominent figures within the opposition camp. Chidi Odinkalu, a former Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), challenged Sani to put his theory to the test. He suggested that the former senator allow Peter Obi to appear on the ballot so that his "tribesmen & women could vote themselves into perdition" to prove the point. Political activist and ADC chieftain Aisha Yesufu also slammed Sani’s remarks, describing them as “laughable at best and pathetic at worst.” She insisted that the narrative that Obi’s support base is tribal was debunked during the 2023 election cycle. “We proved beyond reasonable doubt that the people who were tweeting in the room were from the 4 corners of the country!” she wrote on social media.
