The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday to mark this year’s Workers’ Day celebration. The announcement was made on Wednesday in Abuja by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerian workers across all sectors for their resilience, dedication, and immense contributions to national development, acknowledging the sacrifices they make daily to keep the nation’s economy running.

The Minister described the theme of this year’s celebration as a call to action for both the government and the private sector to prioritize the welfare of the workforce and create safer, more conducive working environments. He noted that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to implementing policies that protect the rights and interests of workers, including the pending review of the national minimum wage. The statement urged workers to continue to embrace the virtues of hard work and to shun any form of divisive tendencies that could threaten the nation’s peace and unity.

Tunji-Ojo further stressed that the Federal Government is fully aware of the economic challenges facing the country and is implementing various interventions to cushion the effects on workers and their families. He encouraged labour unions to sustain dialogue with the government rather than resort to industrial actions that could disrupt economic activities. The Minister assured that ongoing negotiations with organized labour on wage adjustments and other welfare packages would be concluded amicably.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced plans for low-key celebrations in some states, while in others, workers are expected to use the holiday to rest and reflect on their contributions to national growth. Some state governments have also pledged to clear outstanding salaries and pensions owed to workers as part of the commemoration. The Federal Government, in its statement, called on all Nigerians to use the occasion to renew their commitment to national unity and productivity.
