A two-storey building used as a business plaza was gutted by fire in the early hours of Wednesday in Kano, with flames destroying two hospital equipment shops on the ground floor. The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement signed by ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer, saying an emergency call was received at about 4:01 a.m. from a resident identified as Chukude, who reported a fire outbreak at No. 20A Airport Road in Fagge Local Government Area.
“Upon receiving the report, firefighters from the agency’s headquarters and other stations within the metropolis were immediately mobilised to the scene,” the statement said.
Firefighters arrived to find the building, measuring about 100 by 100 feet, already on fire. Several fire trucks from different locations, including Kantin Kwari, Bompai, and the central fire station, were deployed to control the blaze. “The building, a two-floor business plaza, was engulfed in flames, with shops on the ground floor well alight,” the statement added.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined and is currently under investigation. The Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, advised residents to take safety measures to prevent fire outbreaks. He also urged members of the public to remain safety conscious and promptly report emergencies to relevant authorities.
This incident follows a series of fire outbreaks in Kano State. On Monday, a midnight fire gutted the Maganda Road Wood Market, destroying goods and cars worth millions of naira and leaving hundreds of traders counting their losses. Witnesses said the fire started around 3:00 a.m. in the wood section of the market before spreading to the metals cluster. “We later started trying to put it off, then later fire service personnel came. Nobody could tell the exact cause of the fire because we were all at home when it started in the night,” said Nura Umar, one of the traders. The incident reportedly affected over 50 business premises, with thousands of traders operating in the market.
Another trader in the Maganda Road market, Engineer Abdulwahab Ilori, who lost his workshop, lamented the destruction of heavy machines including lathe, welding, and drilling equipment. “If I want to establish everything I lost there, it is almost millions of naira,” he said, adding that his colleagues also lost property worth millions. Ilori also said several auto spare parts shops were burnt, including a newly delivered car valued at about ₦14 million.
The traders appealed to government and wealthy individuals to come to their aid, as many of them have lost their livelihoods in the fire.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Fire Service said it is still trying to ascertain the extent of the loss in the market and the real cause of the fire. However, with investigations ongoing, the immediate focus remains on preventing further outbreaks and providing relief to the affected traders.
