A fatal road accident involving vehicles in the convoy of a frontline governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa State, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, has claimed the life of a supporter and left several others injured. The incident occurred on Friday morning, 1 May 2026, in Gudi, along the Akwanga–Jos road, as the former Inspector‑General of Police and his entourage were en route to Abuja. The aspirant was reportedly travelling to the APC national secretariat to submit his completed nomination and expression of interest forms ahead of the party’s governorship primaries.

According to multiple sources who spoke to this reporter, two vehicles conveying supporters were involved in the crash, which resulted in at least one fatality and several others sustaining injuries of varying degrees. The injured victims were rushed to nearby medical facilities for urgent care, while the body of the deceased has been deposited in a morgue. Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps were swiftly deployed to the scene to manage the situation, evacuate the injured, and clear the wreckage to prevent further incident. The cause of the crash has not been officially determined, but early accounts suggest that excessive speed or a mechanical failure may have contributed.

The tragic development has cast a somber mood over the aspirant’s camp as preparations for the APC primaries continue. Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, who served as Nigeria’s Inspector‑General of Police from 2019 to early 2021, is widely regarded as a top contender for the APC ticket, alongside Senator Ahmed Wadada and other aspirants. His campaign had gained momentum in recent weeks, drawing support from party elders and youth groups across the state. Adamu has not yet personally commented on the accident, but a spokesperson for his campaign described the incident as “devastating” and confirmed that the aspirant himself was not harmed.

The APC governorship primaries in Nasarawa State are scheduled to take place later this month, and the submission of nomination forms marks a critical milestone in the campaign calendar. The accident in Gudi has, however, shifted attention away from politics and toward the human cost of political competition. As the injured supporters receive medical attention and the family of the deceased mourns, the aspirant and his team have been thrown into a period of grief and reflection.

The Nasarawa State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the crash, but a senior police officer confirmed that an investigation has been opened. The Federal Road Safety Corps has also promised a comprehensive report once its preliminary inquiries are complete. Meanwhile, political leaders across party lines have begun sending condolences to the families of the victims. There is no indication that the aspirant’s form submission schedule will be affected.

The accident highlights the hazards that often accompany large political convoys on Nigeria’s roads, where speeding, poor vehicle maintenance and driver fatigue contribute to a high rate of fatal crashes. With the 2027 election cycle intensifying, political campaigns are expected to generate additional traffic, raising concerns about road safety. For now, the people of Nasarawa State mourn the loss of a loyal supporter whose life was cut short in the service of a political ambition.

As the sun set over Gudi, the convoy that had set out in anticipation of a political milestone returned in sorrow. The APC family, the Adamu campaign, and the late supporter’s family now face the difficult task of grieving while the political clock continues to tick. The race for the Government House in Lafia has now been touched by tragedy, serving as a sobering reminder of the fragility of life on the campaign trail.
