Amaechi Declares Himself Most Experienced Presidential Aspirant, Cites Legislative, Executive Roles

Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has publicly emphasised his long political career, stating that he considers himself one of the most experienced politicians among those seeking Nigeria’s presidency.

Amaechi made the remarks while discussing his background in governance, pointing to his years of service across legislative, executive state leadership, and federal cabinet positions.

According to established public records, Amaechi served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007, a period during which he played a central role in the legislative arm of government in the state. His tenure as Speaker lasted eight years.

He later served as Governor of Rivers State from 2007 to 2015, completing two terms in office. During his governorship, he was involved in state-level administration covering infrastructure development, education policy, and public sector management. His tenure also included his role as Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum between 2011 and 2015, where he was a key figure in national-level intergovernmental discussions among state governors.

After leaving office as governor, Amaechi was appointed Minister of Transportation in November 2015 under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. He held the position until May 2022, serving approximately seven years in the federal cabinet.

During his time as minister, he supervised major transport infrastructure projects, including railway modernization programmes such as the Lagos–Ibadan standard gauge railway, the Abuja–Kaduna railway, and progress on the Lagos–Kano rail corridor projects. His tenure also involved port reforms and expansion initiatives in Nigeria’s maritime transport sector.

Amaechi’s comments about his experience come in the context of ongoing political positioning among prominent figures within Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of future electoral cycles. Several political actors have recently begun highlighting their governance records as part of broader discussions on leadership suitability.

His claim of being among the most experienced aspirants is based on the combination of his legislative, executive state leadership, and federal ministerial roles, which together span over two decades in public service.

No official rebuttal or counterstatement from other presidential aspirants has been recorded in response to his remarks at the time of reporting.

Political analysts often note that Nigeria’s leadership contests frequently emphasise prior experience in governance, particularly roles involving both state and federal administration, due to the complexity of the country’s political and economic structure.

Amaechi, a long-time member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has remained active in national political discourse since leaving office, occasionally commenting on governance, economic policy, and party politics.

His latest remarks continue a pattern of political positioning in which aspirants outline their credentials to distinguish themselves within a competitive and evolving political environment.
