The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has shared a light‑hearted yet deeply instructive story about a night he woke up in a cold sweat, convinced that he had been left behind in the rapture because his wife was nowhere to be found.

Speaking at the May 2026 Holy Ghost Service held at the Redemption City camp, the revered cleric used the personal anecdote to drive home a serious message about marital peace and the urgency of settling disputes before bedtime.

Recounting a trip to the United States, Adeboye said he woke up in the middle of the night to discover that his wife, Pastor Folu Adeboye, was not beside him. Thinking she might have gone to the bathroom, he checked multiple toilets in the room and the sitting area, only to find them empty. Panic began to set in. “I sat on the bed, trembling,” he recalled. “In the cold air‑conditioned room, I was sweating. I thought, ‘God, she’s gone and I’ve been left behind. What have I done?’”

The fear lingered for what must have felt like an eternity before a crucial realisation dawned on him: his wife had not travelled with him on that particular trip at all. The congregation burst into laughter, but Adeboye used the moment to pivot to a serious biblical principle.

Referencing the scripture that “two shall be in one bed; one shall be taken and the other left,” he said that belief has guided his commitment to maintaining peace in his home. “That is why I never go to bed with unresolved issues,” he declared. “I don’t want God to take her and leave me behind.” Married to his wife Folu since 1967, Adeboye said he and his wife have remained deeply committed to reconciliation, insisting that no conflict is left unsettled overnight. “The sun must not go down on your wrath,” he warned, urging couples to prioritise forgiveness and unity in their relationships.

Addressing the congregation, the 84‑year‑old cleric stressed that the uncertainty surrounding the timing of the rapture should inspire believers to live at peace, especially within their families. He concluded his message by revealing a prayer he prays every night: “Lord, if you return before morning, don’t leave us behind.”

The story, which quickly went viral on social media, drew both laughter and reflection from listeners, many of whom praised the pastor’s ability to turn a humorous personal moment into a powerful marital lesson.

Adeboye’s message comes at a time when divorce rates and marital conflicts are rising across the country, with many couples citing unresolved disagreements as a major cause of separation.

His counsel to prioritise forgiveness and to never let the sun go down on anger resonates with biblical teachings and practical wisdom that marriage counsellors have long advocated. By sharing his own vulnerability – a rapture scare triggered by a simple absence – Adeboye reminded believers that peace in the home is not just a domestic virtue but a spiritual preparation for eternity.
