Former Chairman of the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Alhaji Alhassan Bawa Niworo, has regained his freedom after spending more than eight months in captivity following his abduction by bandits in Niger State. His release brings relief to his family, friends, and the educational community in the state, where he served as a key administrator before his kidnap.
Niworo was abducted by armed bandits in an undisclosed location within Niger State in late 2025. Details of his release remain sketchy as of the time of this report, but his regaining of freedom marks the end of a prolonged ordeal that had attracted concern from civil society groups and government officials. The former SUBEB chairman has since been reunited with his family. Security agencies have yet to issue an official statement on the circumstances surrounding his release.
His abduction was part of a wave of kidnappings that have plagued Niger State, particularly along the Minna–Bida–Suleja highways and rural communities. Several high-profile individuals, including traditional rulers, politicians, and businessmen, have been seized for ransom over the past year. Niworo’s release is expected to ease tensions within the educational sector, where his leadership at the basic education board had been widely acknowledged.
The Niger State Government and security forces have not disclosed whether any ransom was paid or whether any arrests were made in connection with the abduction. Niworo is said to be receiving medical attention and debriefing by security agents.
