The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non‑Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has suspended its indefinite nationwide strike for a two‑week period, effective Monday, May 11, 2026.
The decision, announced by SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim on Sunday, followed urgent appeals from the Federal Government’s Expanded Tertiary Institutions Renegotiation Committee, led by former Head of Service Yayale Ahmed. The unions had declared a “total and comprehensive” strike on May 1, shutting down administrative and non‑academic activities across all federal and state universities.
“We are giving a two‑week window to conclude the renegotiation exercise and sign agreements as promised,” Ibrahim told reporters. The suspension is conditional on the government’s compliance; if the deadline is missed, “fresh industrial action” may follow.
Both sides confirmed that the controversial 30 percent unilateral salary offer previously floated by the government has been formally withdrawn and that a reviewed offer will now be presented once President Bola Tinubu, who is currently out of the country, returns to approve the new terms. The renegotiation committee also withdrew an “unauthorised” salary‑increase letter that had caused earlier friction.
The unions’ core demands include finalising the drawn‑out renegotiation of the 2009 agreement, a review of salary structures, full implementation of collective bargaining outcomes, payment of outstanding allowances and arrears, and better overall welfare for non‑academic staff. They have also insisted that no unilateral salary adjustments will be accepted.
While the two‑week pause eases immediate pressure on the university system, all parties understand that a permanent solution hinges on the government meeting its commitments. The next 14 days will determine whether the industrial action truly ends or merely enters a short recess.
